Salvador DALÍ (1904-1989)

Often described as 'The Man, The Master, The Myth'. We all know Salvador Dali as an eccentric person and one of the most celebrated artists of all time: "Each morning when I awake, I experience again a supreme pleasure: that being of Salvador Dali". Dali made paintings, sculptures and films about the dreams he had. He painted melting clocks and floating eyes, clouds that look like faces and rocks that look like bodies.

Salvador Dali was born in Figueres, a small town outside of Barcelona, and grew up in a middle-class family. His mother and father suffered greatly before the artist's birth. Their first son, also named Salvador, died quickly after birth and the artist was often told that he is the reincarnation of his dead brother. An idea that surely planted various ideas in his head. His early inspiration was found in the surrounding Catalan region of his childhood: the landscapes would become recurring motifs in his later key paintings. The greatest blow in his life, was losing his mother to breast cancer at the age of 16. 3 years later, his father hosted a solo exhibition of Salvador Dali's technically exquisite charcoal drawings. In 1922, Dali enrolled at the special Painting, Sculpture and Engraving school of San Fernando in Madrid, where he lived at the Residencia de Estudiantes (Student Homes).

Dali is best known for his eccentricity. He kept his hair long and dressed in the style of English aesthetes from the 19th Century, completed with knee-length britches that earned him the title of a dandy. Dalí was involved with surrealism and created dream-like scenes that would be bizarre or impossible in real-life
